Sean M. Kirkpatrick

Sean Kirkpatrick is a physicist, holding a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in nonlinear phonon dynamics, whose career prior to UAP work spanned senior intelligence-analysis roles including Deputy Director of Intelligence for U.S. Strategic Command and Chief Scientist at the Defense Intelligence Agency's Missile and Space Intelligence Center. In 2022 he was selected to establish and lead the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the government's first dedicated, congressionally mandated body for systematically investigating UAP reports across all military domains. Under Kirkpatrick's leadership, AARO adopted a methodologically conservative posture, publishing a 2024 historical report that found no verifiable evidence that the U.S. government had ever recovered non-human craft or biological material, directly contradicting claims made by whistleblowers including David Grusch, whose allegations AARO investigated and did not substantiate. This stance made Kirkpatrick a polarizing figure: disclosure advocates accused AARO of institutional stonewalling and insufficiently thorough investigation, while skeptics and some mainstream scientists praised the office's insistence on evidentiary rigor over anecdote. Kirkpatrick announced his retirement from AARO in late 2023, departing in December of that year for a position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and has since continued to defend AARO's findings publicly, maintaining that the overwhelming majority of investigated cases resolved to conventional explanations, drones, balloons, or sensor artifacts.
