Vallée's first UFO book applied scientific rigor to the raw sighting record, examining the internal consistency of shapes, physical traces, and radar-visual cases across the 1947-1965 era rather than arguing for or against an extraterrestrial origin. It set the pattern for treating the reports themselves as a dataset worth serious statistical study.
