The Five Observables

The Five Observables is AATIP-era shorthand, popularized publicly by former program figure Luis Elizondo, for a specific set of five reported UAP flight characteristics that analysts argued collectively exceed known aerospace engineering capability: instantaneous acceleration from a standstill to extreme speed, hypersonic velocity achieved without the sonic boom or heat signature such speed should physically produce, low observability (invisibility or near-invisibility to radar and other sensors despite apparent solidity), trans-medium travel between air, water, and space without performance loss, and positive lift generated without any visible aerodynamic control surfaces like wings or rotors. The framework functions as a deliberately compact checklist analysts use to sort reports: a case exhibiting several of the five observables together, rather than just an ambiguous light, is treated as a stronger candidate for genuine anomaly by AATIP-descended researchers than an ordinary sighting lacking any of them. The 2004 USS Nimitz Tic Tac encounter is repeatedly cited as the framework's clearest real-world example, with pilot testimony reportedly touching on several of the five observables within a single encounter — rapid acceleration, no visible control surfaces, and radar-defying behavior all described together in the same incident, which is exactly the kind of convergence the checklist was designed to flag.
