Close Encounter

A close encounter is J. Allen Hynek's category for any UFO event occurring within roughly 500 feet of the witness — close enough that misidentification of a distant light or aircraft becomes far less plausible, and physical detail becomes reportable. Hynek, the Air Force's own scientific consultant on Project Blue Book turned public advocate for serious study, introduced the scale in his 1972 book "The UFO Experience" to replace vague adjectives with a graded system: CE1 (a close visual sighting with no other effect), CE2 (physical traces or interference — burned ground, stalled engines), and CE3 (an occupant is seen). Later researchers extended the scale past Hynek's own framework: CE4 for abduction, popularized by the Hopkins/Jacobs abduction-research wave of the 1980s-90s, and CE5 for Steven Greer's human-initiated contact meditation protocol. Socorro, New Mexico in 1964 — where police officer Lonnie Zamora reported a landed craft, scorch marks, and departing occupants — is a textbook CE2/CE3 case still cited in Hynek's own writing. The scale's usefulness is that it separates report categories that skeptics and believers can each analyze on their own terms: CE1/CE2 physical claims are checkable against instruments and soil samples, while CE3+ occupant and abduction claims rest almost entirely on witness testimony.
