Historical context
The largest mass sighting in modern U.S. history — actually two events: an enormous silent V of lights (many insisted one solid craft blotting out stars) crossing the state around 8pm, and a string of stationary lights over the Estrella range near 10pm. Governor Fife Symington mocked it with an aide in an alien suit, then admitted in 2007 he had seen the V himself and believed it 'otherworldly'. Arriving alongside Heaven's Gate (two weeks later) and the ascendant X-Files, Phoenix marks the phenomenon's re-entry into mainstream American life after the 80s-90s fringe period.
Skeptical note
The 10pm lights match A-10 flares dropped over the Barry Goldwater Range on radar-confirmed timing — largely conceded. The 8pm V is contested: planes in formation (per skeptics, with photographic star-occlusion analysis on both sides) versus a single silent craft (per hundreds of close witnesses).
