Nick Pope

Nick Pope worked within the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence from 1985 to 2006, and from 1991 to 1994 was assigned to the section informally known as the 'UFO desk,' officially tasked with reviewing sighting reports to assess whether any carried genuine defence significance. Unlike most government UFO-liaison officials worldwide, who typically maintained low public profiles, Pope became, after leaving that specific post and later the Ministry entirely, an unusually prolific and media-visible public commentator, publishing Open Skies, Closed Minds (1996) detailing his time on the desk and his personal conviction that some cases, including the 1980 Rendlesham Forest incident, deserved serious consideration as potentially non-human in origin. His self-presentation as a credentialed 'government insider' made him a fixture of UFO documentaries and cable programming for three decades, including appearances on History Channel's Ancient Aliens and various UK and U.S. documentary series, and he became one of the most recognizable British voices in the field, frequently commenting on developments in the American UAP disclosure movement after 2017 and drawing comparisons between U.S. and UK institutional handling of the subject. Some critics within skeptical circles questioned whether Pope's relatively junior administrative role was sometimes overstated in his subsequent media positioning, though his firsthand institutional experience remained genuine and valuable. Pope died in April 2026 at his home in Tucson, Arizona, at age 60.
