Michael D. Swords

Michael Swords is a professor emeritus of natural science at Western Michigan University whose academic background gave his UFO scholarship an unusually disciplined, historiographical character. He served for years as editor of the Journal of UFO Studies, the Center for UFO Studies' peer-reviewed academic publication, and has focused much of his research on the institutional and documentary history of UFO investigation, including detailed archival work on Project Blue Book, early Air Force intelligence handling of sighting reports, and the scientific establishment's shifting posture toward the subject across the Cold War. His book Grassroots UFOs (2012) and his contributions to the CUFOS-published UFOs and Government (2012, with Robert Powell, Clark, and others) are considered among the most rigorously sourced institutional histories of American UFO secrecy, drawing on declassified documents rather than anecdote to reconstruct how intelligence agencies actually processed reports internally. Swords has also written on the Roswell case's documentary record and has been a consistent advocate within the field for treating primary-source archival research as the discipline's proper foundation, a stance that has made him an influential, if less publicly visible, model for a more historically grounded style of ufology distinct from witness-testimony-driven investigation.
