Kathleen Marden

Kathleen Marden is the niece of Betty and Barney Hill, whose 1961 New Hampshire abduction case became, under hypnotic regression, the foundational template for the modern abduction narrative. Marden grew up with firsthand family knowledge of the case and, decades later, undertook to formally reinvestigate it using archival material, including Betty Hill's original notes and correspondence, alongside statistical and case-file methods developed with MUFON. Her collaboration with nuclear physicist and Roswell investigator Stanton Friedman produced Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience (2007), which defended the case's core credibility against decades of skeptical reinterpretation, including psychological explanations proposed by researchers such as Martin Kottmeyer that attributed elements of Betty Hill's account to contemporary television and cultural imagery. Marden has served in leadership roles within MUFON, including as director of abduction research, and has continued to publish on the Hill case and broader abduction methodology, positioning herself as both a family custodian of one of ufology's founding narratives and an active field researcher in her own right. Her dual position, as both relative and independent investigator, has made her testimony and archival access uniquely valuable to historians of the case, even as some skeptics note the inherent tension in a family member serving as the case's principal modern defender.
