Joe Nickell

Joe Nickell had an unusually varied career before becoming a professional skeptical investigator, including work as a stage magician, private investigator, and riverboat manager, experience he credits with sharpening his eye for deception, misdirection, and the psychology of eyewitness error. Since 1995 he has served as Senior Research Fellow for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, applying forensic and documentary-analysis methods, drawn partly from his private-investigation background, to paranormal claims broadly, including UFO sightings, crop circles, and photographic hoaxes, alongside ghost, cryptid, and religious-relic investigations. Nickell's approach emphasizes on-site physical investigation over pure theoretical debunking; he has personally visited numerous sighting and crop-circle locations, examined physical trace evidence, and interviewed witnesses using techniques adapted from his P.I. training. He has written extensively for Skeptical Inquirer magazine across four decades and authored or co-authored dozens of books applying similar methods across the full range of anomalous claims. Unlike specialists such as West or Oberg who focus narrowly on video or orbital-mechanics analysis, Nickell's contribution has been a generalist forensic template, useful across UFO photographs, alleged landing traces, and hoax confessions alike, making him one of the most broadly applicable skeptical investigators in the paranormal research field.
