Bruce Maccabee

Bruce Maccabee was a U.S. Navy optical physicist who spent a 35-year career at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory and Naval Surface Warfare Center working on laser and optical systems, while conducting parallel UFO research using the same technical toolkit. He specialized in the photographic and photometric analysis of UFO images and film, most notably the 1950 McMinnville, Oregon photographs and the disputed 1987 Gulf Breeze, Florida photo series, applying image-processing and optical-physics methods to argue that certain cases could not be easily explained as hoaxes or misidentifications — conclusions that drew pushback from skeptics who found his Gulf Breeze analysis too credulous toward a witness later accused of fabrication. As a longtime board member of the Fund for UFO Research and an active MUFON consultant, Maccabee also used Freedom of Information Act requests extensively, helping surface declassified government UFO documents. He served as a bridge figure between the technically rigorous wing of ufology and the government-secrecy research tradition, and remained active in the field into his final years, publishing analyses of the modern Navy UAP videos. He died in 2024 at age 82, remembered as one of the last living physicists from ufology's mid-century scientific wing.
