Metallic Sphere
A metallic sphere is AARO's own most commonly reported UAP morphology in recent U.S. military data: a reflective, ball-shaped object typically estimated at one to four meters across, most often reported operating at altitudes between roughly 10,000 and 30,000 feet, and frequently — though not always — resolved on closer analysis as a conventional balloon once sensor and radar data can be fully reviewed. What keeps the category from being fully closed as "just balloons," in AARO's own public characterization, is a residue of metallic-sphere reports that resist even that mundane explanation once analysts account for reported flight behavior inconsistent with wind-driven balloon movement. The 2025 Buga sphere case in Colombia, widely discussed for its striking metallic appearance and multiple witness accounts, is the modern case most associated with the shape internationally, following the broader pattern in which the era's most-discussed UAP shape shifts over time — discs in the 1950s, triangles in the 1980s-90s, orbs and spheres in the 2020s. Researchers studying "shape drift" note this progression tracks not just cultural expectation but also genuinely improved modern sensor technology, which is now good enough to resolve a distant light into a defined spherical shape where earlier decades' equipment could only register an undifferentiated glow.
