Lenticular Cloud

A lenticular cloud is a smooth, lens- or saucer-shaped cloud that forms when stable, moisture-laden air is forced up and over a mountain range, creating a standing wave pattern that holds the cloud in a fixed position — sometimes for hours — even as strong winds continuously pass straight through it. The shape is nature's single most convincing accidental saucer impersonation: a stationary lenticular cloud, lit from below or behind at sunset, produces a smooth-edged, disc-shaped, sometimes multi-layered "flying saucer" silhouette that has fooled generations of witnesses near mountainous terrain, from the Cascades to the Andes. Its defining diagnostic feature — for anyone checking a report against the possibility — is exactly that apparent stillness paired with genuinely strong high-altitude winds, since a real solid object holding position against that kind of wind would require active propulsion, while a lenticular cloud simply reforms continuously in the same spot as air flows through the standing wave. The formation has been a classic-era misidentification staple since the earliest days of "flying saucer" reporting in 1947, and remains one of the first mundane explanations investigators check for any UFO report filed near a prominent mountain range, particularly the disc-shaped daylight sightings that fall under Hynek's DD classification.
